SAB KickStart is a youth entrepreneurial programme aimed at assisting small business owners who are between the ages of 18 and 35 who want to elevate their businesses to new heights. The programme was first developed in 1995 as a youth enterprise development programme to alleviate poverty amongst South Africa’s previously disadvantaged youth and foster a spirit of entrepreneurship. We believe in the power of youth as key drivers of our country’s economy. As a result, we are committed to enabling a game-changing impact of empowering local youth owned businesses to become reliable suppliers to industry organizations sustainably.
SAB KickStart is SAB’s flagship enterprise development programme, we have invested over R100 million in entrepreneurial development, supported 24 558 entrepreneurs and empowered 3 458 youth-owned businesses in South Africa. The programme has extended across the continent in various forms and now takes place in at least 6 countries in Africa.
SAB KickStart has since evolved to a more strategic and targeted development programme that enables youth to have a real voice and play an active role in the economy by running successful and sustainable, youth-led businesses. This ambition aligns with and assists government to achieve its national development goals. We are aware that on average 70% of small businesses fail in the first 1-3 years of operation. We wish to ensure that those that operate in key high potential industries, and are led by young, ambitious and driven owners, are fully supported in their entrepreneurial journey through fit-for-purpose knowledge, tools and processes that will assist them to succeed long-term.
SAB KickStart is a supplier readiness programme that’s built around a key objective: Enabling high potential youth owned business to become suppliers of various organisations in the private and public sector, thereby fast-tracking the transformation of the economy. A large focus of our programme addresses the key challenges met by small business owners- accessing supply chains. Supply chain readiness includes access to operational processes and tools, business skills support, fit for purpose mentorship, financial and non-financial resources, and an overall level of competitiveness driven by the right capabilities and capacity that will ensure delivery as an emerging supplier.
Furthermore, SAB KickStart also leverages on innovation to drive participation of youth in entrepreneurship in urban, and especially in peri-urban areas.
SAB KickStart Ignite supports youth entrepreneurs with innovative businesses, products or services, that have the potential to grow into viable businesses.
Ideally, these can solve SAB’s own business challenges and can be scaled up into businesses that are future creators of employment.
Eligible entrepreneurs will receive technical, product, and business development support that includes one-on-one mentoring, prototyping, commercialisation, and financial support where required.
SAB KickStart Ignite is a six-month programme that acts as a pipeline to enter more advanced programmes such as SAB Tholoana, and SAB KickStart Boost.

eWaste Africa is Africa’s first environmentally ethical, legally compliant light bulb recycling solution. Our ultimate catch phrase is: we provide industry with a feasible, environmentally ethical, legally compliant, cost effective and sustainable alternative to dumping. We are about creating something different, which is to help save the environment by doing something practical and creating jobs while at it.
Up until August 2016, lightbulbs could go into specific landfill sites. They had to be treated and stored in steel drums. Those drums would be sunk into holes in the ground. We entered the market knowing that we wanted to divert the process from dump to recycle. Now the practise has been banned. By August 2021, no electronic waste will be allowed to go into a landfill.
I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur and always knew that one day I’ll run my own business hence Eyam, an events company, was registered when I was 20 years old. The motivation to start running my business came after my career as a professional dancer where I had the privilege to travel the world and I got to experience different opulent events. During this time, I learnt to manage my finances as we weren’t paid regularly and what I earned, had to last me till my next pay check.
My dream has always been to run a sustainable business and in five years’ time, I would like to have accumulated enough assets and created other income streams. Over the past few years I’ve also accumulated many assets and my business has allowed me to provide a good life for my family. My ultimate dream is to run an empire for generations to come.
Every entrepreneur needs this kind of coaching and mentorship so that they can have guidelines and structure to understand how to run a business. It’s highly important to be able to constantly check the boxes to see that you are on the right path and understand the processes. Thanks to everything learned at KickStart, we’ve now branched out to Cape Town and have pretty much conquered the iconic township blueprint – we have Soweto, the biggest township and Langa, the first township in South Africa.
SAB KickStart is not about whether you lose or win; it’s about the lessons you learn from the programme that will carry you for many years to come. Just look at us! Most importantly, let the passion drive you because when there’s no cash, the passion will keep you going.
